FMCSA grants two, denies three hours of service relief requests
The agency granted exemptions to two waste and recycling companies allowing their short-haul drivers to operate for 14 hours instead of 12. FMCSA denied applications from three companies that asked for their drivers to drive beyond the current limits of the HOS regs.

FMCSA denies request for 18.5-hour on-duty period from environmental emergency response companies
FMCSA in its denial said there is no basis to allow drivers to drive after the 18th hour of coming on duty. The companies noted its drivers would not exceed eight hours of driving time during a shift, but FMCSA said it doesnât believe limiting drivers to eight hours of drive time offsets the safety risks of an 18.5-hour driving window.

Machinery transport, repair group petitions for hours extension for short-haul drivers
Kentucky Equipment Distributors, which is made up of seven large machinery distributors operating in several states, is requesting that its short-haul drivers be allowed to return to their work-reporting location after 14 hours instead of 12 hours.

Fireworks haulers seek renewal of 14-hour rule relief
In their request, Illumination Fireworks Partners and Ace Pyro asked that drivers of its 60 commercial vehicles be allowed to exclude off-duty and sleeper-berth time of any length from the calculation of the 14 hours.

FMCSA grants HOS relief to truckers hauling food, water for firefighters responding to disasters
The drivers can extend their on-duty time from 14 hours to 16 hours, while still driving a maximum of 11 hours in a day. They can also use on-duty, not-driving time to satisfy the 30-minute break requirement under the terms of the exemption.

Drivers, carriers offer mixed reactions to proposed hours changes
Many comments already submitted agree with the proposed changes, while others think it will allow carriers to extend driversâ working day by three hours. Other commenters mostly agree with the changes but would prefer more flexibility with the 30-minute break and the sleeper berth split.

Comment period for proposed hours of service overhaul extended through Oct. 21
FMCSA announced in a Federal Register notice to be published Thursday, Sept. 19, it has extended the comment period from Oct. 7 to Oct. 21. The 14-day extension effectively gives the hours proposal a 60-day comment period from the time it was published Aug. 22.

34-hour restart regs rebuffed by Congress in 2014 officially nixed from rulebook
The regulations, which have not been enforced since December 2014, limited truck drivers to one restart per week and required the restart to include two 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. periods. Those regulations were suspended by Congress in December 2014, though they technically remained on the books.

It gets worse when those outside of trucking presume safety performance goes up or down in lockstep with changes in cherry-picked numbers. This led, for example, to widespread reports that the proposal would ârelaxâ existing regulations, thereby automatically increasing fatigue.

Second FMCSA listening session on hours of service set for D.C.
The second of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrationâs listening sessions on the proposed hours of service changes will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17, at U.S. DOT headquarters in Washington, D.C. The listening session will be held from 1-3 p.m. and is open to the public.

The GATS listening session, which will be at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, will begin at 10 a.m. and is scheduled for two hours. FMCSA says the listening sessions will allow the public to present comments, views and relevant research on the proposed hours changes.

FMCSA renews hours exemption for paper company drivers
WestRock to allow its Chattanooga, Tennessee, paper mill drivers to occasionally work up to 16 consecutive hours and return to work with less than 10 consecutive hours off duty. The drivers travel on approximately 275 feet of public road between the shipping and receiving departments shuttling trailers.
