ELD protest enters third day in Miami
A group of drivers and owner-operators have shut down along U.S. 27 near the Florida 826 interchange in greater Miami through the end of the day today, at least, in protest of the electronic logging device mandate. Others have joined in around the country.

Trucker who crashed truck while drunk, changing pants shut down by FMCSA
Allen R. Johnson Sr. told Vermont State Police after the Nov. 2 accident that he had set the cruise control on the truck to 63 miles per hour, then stood up to change his pants. A report from the state indicated Johnson’s blood alcohol content was .209, approximately five times the legal limit for truck drivers.

According to FMCSA, safety inspections were conducted on six of the company’s seven trucks, and out-of-service violations were found in all six trucks.

Ky.-based driver shut down after failed field sobriety test, other violations
The officer found in the truck cab a gallon jug of beer, along with drug paraphernalia, including a smoking pipe. A field sobriety test was conducted, which the driver failed. He also had unauthorized passengers in the vehicle.

Tennessee-based driver shut down after police find drugs, beer in cab after crash
Jason L. Flynn made an illegal turn in north Georgia on March 17, which caused a crash with a passenger vehicle. The vehicle became wedged underneath Flynn’s trailer, hospitalizing the driver.

S.C. driver shut down after involvement in fatal hit-and-run, Mass. trucking company shut down
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued effective shutdown orders recently to a South Carolina-licensed driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run and a Massachusetts-based trucking company that failed to maintain equipment and oversee its drivers.

California driver shut down after failed drug tests, crash
The driver was found to be medically unqualified to operate a commercial vehicle during a May 2015 FMCSA investigation in which the agency discovered he’d tested positive for the use of prohibited controlled substances, amphetamines or methamphetamines, on three separate occasions since 2012.

330-truck fleet sat idle for nearly two weeks while trying to shrug out-of-service order
Update, 1/7/16: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced late Thursday, Jan. 7, that it has reinstated Land-Air’s “conditional” rating, allowing the carrier to resume its normal operation. The 340-driver fleet had been idle since Dec. 29.

Three-truck Ohio-based fleet Garfield Trucking has been issued an effective shutdown order following a roadside inspection that yielded dozens of violations and subsequent noncooperation from the carrier during an FMCSA inspection.

Minnesota trucker shut down by FMCSA for hours violations, medical qualifications
Minnesota truck driver John Ray Carpenter has been issued an effective shutdown order by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for being “medically unqualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle,” discovered following a fatal crash last month.
