A few prominent trucking policy reforms could be on tap in Congress in the coming weeks and months as lawmakers return to Washington from their annual August recess. Most prominently, lawmakers could take up a bill — or a rider to a must-pass spending bill — to delay the compliance date of the looming electronic logging device mandate.

Trucker charged after 10 found dead in human smuggling operation in Texas
Though the incident appears to be an attempt to smuggle migrants into the U.S., local police have said it is being considered a human trafficking crime. Nearly 40 people were found in the trailer in San Antonio on Saturday.

Human trafficking convicts would be barred for life from trucking under Senate bill
A bill introduced by the Senate’s Commerce Committee this week would permanently disqualify truck drivers from holding a CDL if they’ve been convicted of a human trafficking offense. The legislation part of a two-bill package aimed at combating human trafficking that occurs on U.S. roadways.
