UPDATE: Bill Mack not back yet
The day after we published the following look-back through some of the videos we’ve done with trucking radio legend Bill Mack, SiriusXM ran this July 2 update on the status of Mack’s reported return as overnight D.J. on the Willie’s Roadhouse channel — as some of you commented on our Facebook page, quite rightly, he […]

The ‘Time Bandit’ electric cargo-strap roller
Sometime flatbedder and former small fleet owner Johnny White finds inspiration in day-to-day problems — that might not be the best way, however, to describe the occasion that spurred him on to his latest solution, the new TimeBandit electric cargo-strap winder (pictured). As he tells it, “I was up in St. Cloud, Minn., when it […]

The American Trucking Associations’ summary of new highway bill items that are of interest to motor carriers, sent out to various media, follows — I’ve rearranged a few items of driver/owner-operator interest to bring them closer to the top. Electronic Logging Devices The bill requires DOT to establish regulations mandating electronic logging devices (EOBRs) for […]

Bug-removal tip: Scotch Brite ‘Dobie’ pads
This one comes by way of owner-operator Henry Albert’s blog, where he shares an anecdote about the Scotch Brite “Dobie” cleaning pads (pictured) he uses to clean bugs from his windshield — and how he somewhat inadvertently passed the trick off to Daimler engineers at the Uvalde, Texas, proving grounds. Give it a read here. […]

Irish truckers report on South Korean truckers’ strike
An estimated 80 percent of the 380,000 total South Korean truckers were reported to have gone on strike “demanding the introduction of standard freight charges, a 30 percent rise in transportation fees and revised laws on labour rights,” reported the (you’re hearing right) Irish Trucker Magazine. News travels faster than on-highway rigs, eh? Platts reports […]

MADSEN: With more value-added services on trucks, driver value declines
If you missed this post to Phil Madsen’s Learning Something New Every Day blog, from earlier in the month, give it a gander soon as you can. It’s a must-read for the quality of analysis it gives to the expediting owner-operator’s first experience with software that can, with an operator’s permission, track his cell phone […]

Have you seen this custom truck lately?
A look back here a few years to the Custom Rigs magazine vid of Doug Fisher’s The Gambler 2007 Peterbilt 379 Legacy edition, which among other features sports of an actual shotgun as the shifter and a signature by none other than the original Gambler himself, Kenny Rogers. A commenter on the vid at our […]

Defining ‘gobbledygook’ with driver Sandy Long
Missouri-based Weston Transportation driver Sandy Long, blogging here, this morning laid down a primer for owner-operators and drivers on the term gobbledygook, defined by Wester’s as “wordy and generally unintelligible jargon.” She found some examples of it in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s postponed proposal (from last year) to mandate electronic onboard recorders for […]

Heat: Your tires’ No. 1 enemy
The folks at GITI Tire reminded us of this in their most recent newsletter, citing an article from the Saturday Evening Post that estimated 80 percent of tire failures were due to underinflation — the article appeared in 1928, and “nothing has changed,” the company said. It’s a no-brainer, really, but how many times have […]
