Gary Buchs, 62, of Colfax, Illinois, has spent many solo hours logging 2.3 million accident-free miles in his 27-year driving career. His success comes from being able to interact with so many people daily. Buchs is one of three finalists for the 2016 Owner-Operator of the Year, produced by the Truckload Carriers Association and Overdrive.

Submissions for next year’s Owner-Operator of the Year and Company Driver of the Year contests officially begin Sept. 19, but operators who stop by the TCA booth and express interest in applying can do so at the show. 2015’s top truckers won $25,000.

Third time does it for Company Driver of the Year Danny Smith
It was the third time in four years that Danny Smith, a dry van driver for Big G Express of Shelbyville, Tenn., was nominated for the award. Smith mentors other drivers and often is called upon by management for his opinions on equipment and other matters.

“As long as you can balance home life and work, and having a good wife at home helps, you’ll have a good career,” he says. Tricco is up for the $25,000 prize that comes with the Overdrive-TCA Owner-Operator of the Year award. The winner will be announced Tuesday, March 8.
