Cummins talks fuel economy, low-viscosity oils

Cummins said last night it has gained a 40 percent market share of the heavy-duty market worldwide, up from 20 percent just a few years ago.

Representatives from Cummins updated trucking industry media members Tuesday, March 19, where the company said its 2013 engines offer a 2 percent fuel efficiency increase from its 2012 lineup.

The increase in fuel economy comes from changes to gearing that allow both the ISX12 and ISX15 engines to achieve peak torque at 100 fewer rpm. The company’s also approved the use of low-viscosity 10W-30 engine oils, it said.

The company also made known that, with the addition of Navistar and International trucks late last year, all North American OEM’s offer Cummins as an engine option — Freightliner, Western Star, Mack, Volvo, Peterbilt, Kenworth and Navistar.
