Carrier profits in 2017 gained big in second half of year
Some of the country’s largest carriers saw their revenues and incomes climb in 2017 from 2016, with nearly all of the growth coming in the second half of the year, according to public earnings reports issued by publicly traded carriers in recent weeks. A tight truck market and soaring rates helped boost the carriers’ profits.

Pilot Flying J has already resolved the criminal and civil cases against it stemming from the alleged fuel rebate scheme. Former President Mark Hazelwood has been convicted of fraud and conspiracy charges related to the alleged scheme.

OOIDA asks FMCSA to institute pause button for 14-hour clock
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has filed a petition with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration asking the agency to allow drivers to pause their 14-hour daily clock for up to three straight hours and to nix the 30-minute rest break required by current hours regs.

While long haul driving jobs could succumb to the market pressures of self-driving rigs, the company concludes there will be a spike in the number of drivers needed for localized driving jobs. Uber researchers also project that the industry will move away from per-mile pay structures in favor of hourly pay.

Teams can earn up to $8,000 each year in bonuses and $4,000 in vacation time by running 60,000 miles four times over the course of a year. If the drivers choose not to take vacation time, they will be paid $500 per driver for each week of unused vacation at the end of each year.
