New Indiana welcome center opens along I-70
Indiana last week celebrated the opening of a new rest area to bring new parking options along the Overdrive reader-named "Worst Road" in the country of I-70. The new pull-off features a total of 128 truck parking spaces.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun joined the Indiana Department of Transportation, IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles, public officials and contracting partners for a ceremonial ribbon cutting last week to mark the opening of the newly constructed Clear Creek Welcome Center on eastbound I-70 near the Indiana/Illinois state line.
The new welcome center replaces the previous facility built in 1992 and is inspired by Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. Interactive exhibits feature a replica of the Borg-Warner Trophy, a scoring pylon, an actual IndyCar, and racing helmets.
Other amenities at the welcome center include an adult recreation area, children's playground, walking path, and dog park. Increased semi-truck parking is also available, with 128 total spaces -- an increase of 78 spaces from the previous welcome center. INDOT noted that through its long-term rest area and welcome center improvement plan, the agency will add more than 1,200 truck parking spaces, nearly doubling capacity statewide.
The news will come as welcome for some in Overdrive's audience, given the recent Truckers’ 2025 Highway Report Card showed Indiana ranking in the top 10 for states with the worst parking options. (As noted above, I-70, on which the new rest area is situated, was the far-and-away "winner," furthermore, for worst haul route in the nation.) Differences of opinion were easy to find, however, particularly with respect to the parking situation in the state. Indiana also ranked among the top 10 states for the best parking availability and options.

"The goal of INDOT's overall plan is to provide safe, informative locations for travelers to rest, relax, and recharge," said INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist. "In addition to Clear Creek, we're looking forward to opening the Black River welcome center on I-64 in Posey County later this year."
INDOT's plan includes more than $600 million in improvements at 20 rest areas, welcome centers, and truck parking sites to be complete by the end of Fiscal Year 2034. Construction of the Clear Creek welcome center began in spring of 2023 and was led by prime contractor, Hannig Construction, of Terre Haute.
The new welcome center, located at mile marker 2 on EB I-70, is open to the public.

Rooftop marker light issue prompts Volvo VNL recall
Volvo Trucks North America is recalling more than 3,000 of its new VNL tractors due to an issue with the roof marker lights.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, approximately 3,124 model year 2025-’26 Volvo VNL trucks are being recalled because the roof center marker lights may fail to illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Marker lights that fail to illuminate can reduce visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash, the recall notes.
Dealers will replace the center roof marker light, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Jan. 2. Owners can contact Volvo Trucks' customer service at 800-528-6586 with recall number RVXX2509. NHTSA’s recall number is 25V-757.
Nearly 9,000 Mack Granites recalled for headlight failure
Mack Trucks is recalling approximately 8,857 model year 2024-’25 Mack Granite units equipped with LED headlights. The headlights in the affected trucks could fail, the recall states.
Recall documents note “inadequate design of the ball basket mount and lack of appropriate routing and clipping points to protect harnesses” caused the issue. Dealers will replace the LED headlights, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Jan. 2. Owners may contact Mack's customer service at 800-866-1177 with recall number SC0485. NHTSA’s recall number is 25V-756.
Car-haul Volvos recalled for seat belt issue
Volvo Trucks has also recalled approximately 242 model year 2019-’26 VAH models designed for auto-haul applications.
In the affected trucks, the passenger seat belt anchor may fail due to inadequate floor reinforcement. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."
Dealers will install a new weld nut and washer, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Jan. 2. Owners can contact Volvo Trucks' customer service at 800-528-6586 with recall number RVXX2510. NHTSA’s recall number is 25V-753.
