'Mint Condition': 2010 Pete 389 built with old-school touch

Canadian custom truck shop Beger Industries made a splash at the 2026 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this year with its “Mint Condition” 2010 Peterbilt 389, featured here.

Shop owner Darryl Beger called the rig “a modern truck, but with a touch of old school.”

Manitoba-based Beger Industries has hands both in custom builds and parts manufacturing for truck owners doing their own work. “Mint Condition” stands as testament to the work the shop does and features many of Beger’s own parts, with assist from other shops, too.

The rig caught the attention of MATS judges, capturing Best of Show in the Limited Mileage -- Bobtail with Miles category.

As detailed in the video up top, the rig boasts a 1LW Cat 3406E engine backed by an 18-speed and 3.55 rears. The engine’s painted to match the frame and accents with Peterbilt’s “Desert Turquoise” color.

The front end features Beger’s own grille, old-school headlights, a 12 Ga. Customs flip bumper and body drop kit, and a 19-inch blind-mount bumper built by Beger. The front end features Beger’s own grille, old-school headlights, a 12 Ga. Primary paint is General Motors’ “Barbwire Gray.” Pinstriping all around the rig was done by Van Knobb Kustom Paint.

The lighting all around the truck accents the paint, with teal throughout to go along with white underglow “just to highlight the truck,” Beger said.

The truck’s interior is just as impressive as the exterior. Beger made all of the panels and installed all of the audio, which includes Hertz speakers with JL Audio subs and SounDigital amps, pushing about 3500W.

The interior, including the dash, was wrapped by a company out of Quebec. The floors feature Lightnin Jack sea deck flooring. The interior, including the dash, was wrapped by a company out of Quebec. The floors feature Lightnin Jack sea deck flooring.

When the Beger team arrived in Louisville for MATS, they hadn't reinstalled a fifth wheel on the truck, yet learned it'd need to be able to pull a trailer to be entered.

The team had to drill through the impressively pinstriped deck plate and add a ball hitch. They then had to hook to a trailer for show staff, Beger said, to demonstrate that it could indeed pull. Darryl Beger: Hi, I'm Darryl Beger, Beger Industries. We're based out of Manitoba, Canada. We custom build trucks for people and manufacture parts. We built this truck, we started at after MATS, coming back from MATS last year. It's a 2010 Peterbilt 389.

285 wheelbase, 40-pin Cat engine in it 1LW. Transmission-wise is an 18-speed transmission and drivetrain is 3.55 gears, Super 40s with three quarter locks or three way locks on it.

So, it has our grille on it. We went old school with the old lights on it. Has a 12 Gauge flip bumper and body drop kit on it, and a 19-inch blind mount bumper we built.

We had 24-inch milled wheels built for it, machined out, and our step boxes we built our have the pleated sunburst pattern in it along with our door panels here that we built for a subtle feature. We went old school with the stacks and the heat shields here as well.

The interior, we built all the panels for and did all the audio for. Audio-wise we're running all Hertz speakers and JL subs, W7 eight-inch subs, SounDigital amps, about 3500W to the stereo or to the amps and then to the speakers. We had all the interior wrapped by a company in Quebec, including the dash, and has Lightnin Jack sea deck flooring in it front and back along with the firewall, and the step covers. 36-inch bunk.

We had our custom panel done underneath the truck. Unfortunately, we had to put a ball hitch on here to be legal to run this show here, so we had to drill into a nice pinstripe deck plate to be legal to run.

Overdrive: Why is that?

Darryl Beger: Well, according to the rules here that we didn't know, it had to be DOT spec truck to pull a trailer. So we found that out last minute. So we had to run out and make some modifications to be legal, and we had to hook it to a trailer here at the show to prove that it could pull. It wasn't just mounted to a little piece of deck plate that would flex and everything like that. It's built on 3/8 steel, just like a normal fifth wheel would be. So we had no problem, I guess, drilling into it and pulling what we had to pull.

We painted it in house. It's a Chevy GM color, and the frame is done in desert turquoise from Peterbilt factory color. All the pin striping is done by Van Knobb Kustom Paint. Has lighting, some teal lighting throughout, and everything else is white underglow for just to highlight the truck.

It's a modern truck, but with a touch of old school, with the pinstriping and the pleated and the exhaust shields and stuff. So that's about it.
