Missouri ballot would tackle tolls; ‘No polish required’

Aug. 5 ballot measure, with enough yes votes, would essentially raise the state sales tax by three-quarters of 1 percent and devote those new collected funds exclusively to fund transportation infrastructure — and expressly prohibit tolling.

In this graphic from the Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates, the Missouri Trucking Association’s analysis shows that motorists on average would spent about 8 cents per day more than current levels with the sales-tax proposal on the Aug. 5 ballot. That’s compared in the graphic to a fuel-tax boost that would raise the same amount of revenue envisioned by the sales-tax proposal.

An $11 billion highway funding plan passed the House on Tuesday and would patch the Highway Trust Fund for six months, but the bill does nothing to address the systemic shortfall in federal transportation and infrastructure funding.
