Trucker named Highway Angel for swerving into ditch to avoid head-on collision
Burlington, Vermont-based truck driver Jim Kurent, on Jan. 19, was on a two-lane highway in Vermont when a Subaru going the opposite direction crossed the center line right in front of him. Kurent was able to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting the car head-on.

Wilbur was driving northbound on I-95 near New Haven, Connecticut, hauling for ABF Freight when he suddenly saw taillights on the southbound side of the interstate, signaling to him there was a wrong-way driver.

Kevin Phillips had to make a quick maneuver to avoid hitting the car, then watched as the car slid off the road into a grassy area, hit a culvert and roll four times, narrowly missing a telephone pole.

Husband-wife team named Highway Angels for saving motorist from burning vehicle
The Zimmermans worked with two other men to pull the man free, then carried him away from the vehicle. He told them he had a gun and ammunition in the car, so they moved as quickly as they could to put more distance between them and the burning car. Shortly after, the car exploded.

Oklahoma City-based truck driver Jim Higginbotham came up on a crash in which a driver had been ejected from his car. He stopped and stayed with the man and the other driver involved in the crash until emergency personnel arrived.

The drivers came across a young family whose young daughter had accidentally locked their baby inside their pickup truck. The drivers helped the family unlock the truck to get to their baby.

Trucker named Highway Angel for third time after helping detain drunk driver
After witnessing a single-vehicle crash, Christopher Lemaire stopped to help the driver, who tried to flee the scene. Lemaire detained the driver until police arrived, who informed him the driver had hit two cars a few miles back and fled.

Doran Doravi saw an overturned tractor-trailer lying on the cab’s passenger side stretched across the northbound side of the highway. He stopped to help and, with the help of another trucker, was able to get the driver out of the overturned cab.

Two drivers recognized as Highway Angels for helping stranded colleague
Scott Wagner, a driver for Spartan Direct, and Robert Barnette, an owner-operator with Swift, jumped in Barnette’s truck and drove 38 miles to help a colleague who had a flat tire on her way to the Mid-America Trucking Show in March.

Army veteran trucker named Highway Angel for assisting unresponsive driver
Ricky Shearer found the wife of another trucker crying out for help as her husband lay unconscious and unresponsive on the ground. He rushed to check on the man, found he wasn’t breathing and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
