April Fool’s Day ELD-OOS nightmare may not be tough as some have guessed
In the weekly spot market update, a little intel from a recent DAT survey suggests FMCSA’s 96 percent ELD compliance rate is probably close to correct. Meantime, spot rates hold firm, and may be on the rise this week with volume trends in dry van, flat segments.

Spot market: Freight volumes, rates mostly held steady in the last week
While the spot market may seem to be on a plateau, it’s on much higher ground compared to a year ago. Last week’s national average load-to-truck ratio was 14.1, nearly double what it was at this time last year. Dry van, reefer markets spotlighted here.

Flatbed demand surges toward Spring; van, reefer mostly neutral
The number of loads on DAT load boards was up 5 percent and truck posts were up 3 percent last week, an indication that the economy continues to hum along. Unless you’re a flatbed hauler, in which case there’s a little more going on than just humming.

Spring freight season signs: Where’s it getting hot and where it’s not
DAT analyst Mark Montague notes that “we see flatbed accelerating ahead of schedule. Generally, we have had a La Nina winter that has resulted in more precipitation in the northern tier of states and allowed states in the Southeast region to get a jump on spring.”

With the rise in fuel over the last half-year, have rates really risen by much?
Separating out fuel surcharges from average rates over the July 2017 (when fuel prices hit a 2017 trough) to January 2018 period, spot market dry van and reefer rates are still up well more than 10 percent each, flatbed less so.

Spot market: Latest demand, rates, volume pictures in all three major segments
It’s looking more and more like we could get an early spring on the spot market. While the national average van rate declined for the sixth week in a row, it’s still higher than at any point in 2017 at $2.17 per mile – and it’s February. More on reefer, flatbed picture too.
