Per-mile rates hang near all-time highs in April (and a new inclusion ā specialized rate averages)
Per-mile rates on the spot market again saw strong gains in April, according to monthly rates data from Truckstop.com. All three major truckload segments ā dry van, reefer and flatbed ā surged in the month, and all three flirted with all-time highs since Truckstop.com began reporting monthly rate averages.

Van freight volumes edged up last week, but load posts were outpaced once again by an increase in available trucks. That led to a 5 cent dip in the national van rate, which sits at $2.16 per mile for April ā still higher than the March average. Truck availability rose on spot market last week, moderating rates even as reefer/van volumes increased
The post-Easter lull in reefer volumes didnāt last long. Load counts were up 15 percent last, close to where they were at the close of the first quarter. Produce is moving out of Southern California and Central Florida, but weāre just getting started.

Teamsā āgolden ticketā in todayās trucking environment suggested in part by Columbus, Ohio-headquartered Zipline Logisticsā survey of its carrier network, comprised of both small and comparatively large fleets, about the turn to electronic logging devices. Survey results, based on responses from more than 100 carriers, show something of a shift in thinking depending on the size of the carrier when it comes to the desirability of longer or shorter hauls.

Spring has sprung on the spot market
So much for March going out like a lamb. Nationally, the final week of the month featured a 3.5 percent increase in available freight, a 3.1 percent decrease in capacity, and another record high load-to-truck ratio for flatbed freight, and rates continued to rise in the early week.
