Short holiday week on the spot market: Rates rose, though demand indicators lagged
The spot market last week saw lower load volumes than in recent weeks on DAT load boards, notes the company’s Ken Harper, mostly given the Fourth of July landed on a Tuesday this year. And though freight volumes were down, average rates for vans, reefers and flats were up by a dime, a nickel and a nickel respectively.

Last week on the spot market, the load-to-truck ratio for outbound loads in the Los Angeles area shot up to about 7 load postings on DAT’s load board per one truck posting. The average is about two loads to one truck. The recent imbalance in loads to trucks puts upward pressure on rates.

A new survey conducted by DAT shows something of a disconnect between carrier/broker views on detention. While detention is one of the top 5 business issues for 8 in 10 carriers, only 20 percent of brokers agreed that detention was that significant for them.
