Spring has not sprung, to say the least, when it comes to vans, reefers on the spot market
National average spot van and refrigerated freight rates slipped again during the week ending April 13. The number of load posts fell 4 percent while truck posts increased. The arrival of produce season in several southern markets failed to make up for the effects of more capacity and bad weather.

Holidays are over, it’s certain. The large majority of the trucking world is back to work. The number of trucks posted on the spot truckload freight market increased 77 percent last week, well ahead of the 9 percent gain in available loads.

The “Black Friday” after Thanksgiving once marked the end of the retail-freight season, but last week showed how e-commerce is extending the holiday push. Rates on the 100 highest-volume van lanes rose an average of 2.3 percent, or 5 cents per mile, during the week ending Nov. 24, with 78 of those lanes moving higher,

Spot market: Van demand on upswing out West
Last Friday, outbound loads outnumbered available trucks in the L.A. market on DAT load boards by more than 10-to-1, lifting rates on lanes to Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix and Denver. The average van rate from L.A. was $2.59/mile, up 4 cents compared to the previous week.
