Spring has sprung on the spot market
So much for March going out like a lamb. Nationally, the final week of the month featured a 3.5 percent increase in available freight, a 3.1 percent decrease in capacity, and another record high load-to-truck ratio for flatbed freight, and rates continued to rise in the early week.

April Fool’s Day ELD-OOS nightmare may not be tough as some have guessed
In the weekly spot market update, a little intel from a recent DAT survey suggests FMCSA’s 96 percent ELD compliance rate is probably close to correct. Meantime, spot rates hold firm, and may be on the rise this week with volume trends in dry van, flat segments.

The number of loads on DAT load boards was up 5 percent and truck posts were up 3 percent last week, an indication that the economy continues to hum along. Unless you’re a flatbed hauler, in which case there’s a little more going on than just humming.

Van, reefer demand update: Rates reverse course, heading up in the last week
Van volumes have been rising for two weeks, and rates followed last week. Meanwhile, reefer has mimicked van trends, though swings have been sharper. At once, spot rates have on average been above contract rates for reefers since September, perhaps portending more positive moves to come there.

Spring freight season signs: Where’s it getting hot and where it’s not
DAT analyst Mark Montague notes that “we see flatbed accelerating ahead of schedule. Generally, we have had a La Nina winter that has resulted in more precipitation in the northern tier of states and allowed states in the Southeast region to get a jump on spring.”

As spot market hummed into Thanksgiving week, higher rates in all three major segments emerged
“These should be happy holidays for the trucking community” when it comes rates, says DAT’s Ken Harper, “especially owner-operators. Looking farther out, the prognosis is still good, although there are reports of a slowing economy. We shall see.”

After surging for several weeks van spot market rates moderated a bit the week of Oct. 8-14. Looser truckload capacity led to a lower national average, interrupting what had been seven straight weeks of increases.
