Since launch last year, the ZED ELD, one of few electronic logging devices available for a onetime charge for the hardware ($200) with no monthly fee for operation, has “continued to grow the user base” among owner-operators and small fleets, says John Henry, Director of Sales. Speaking at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, Henry pointed to continued refinements to the ELD app, too, as improving user experience.

For fleets, the company’s fleet management portal has added functionality, and free International Fuel Tax Agreement support is available to all users. “We just added Canadian rule sets” within the app for accurate hours summary counters visible to operators specifying Canadian rules, Henry says. “We’ve added California [intrastate] and will continue to add intrastate rule sets as we go along.”

In both of those rule set modes, too, the company has shifted the way it displays the summary to show time elapsed rather than time remaining, better respecting operators’ long way of interacting with paper logs as opposed to the ticking countdown clock common in so many ELDs. Henry says such updated summary displays are coming to the principal ELD app’s interstate property carriers under U.S. rules, too, quite soon.

Ancillary services are on the way in access to integrated Cummins diagnostic services for owners of Cummins engines and, “for non-Cummins vehicles, we’ll have fault code monitoring,” Henry says. It will be among the company’s first further forays into where it expects to ultimately provide value for users “in additional data and analytics” products. “We’re working with partners like Cummins to get more data flows.

For the company, he says, “uptime optimization is something you’ll hear more about in the future — helping people avoid unscheduled downtime” with data.
