Melby Millirans was driving north on I-75 out of Ocala, Florida, when he saw an SUV ahead of him veer toward the guardrail, then swerve sharply to the right and run off the road, down a steep embankment and crash into a row of trees. He stopped, called 911 and grabbed a flashlight to go help.

Ohio DPS proposes to eliminate skills test waiver requirements that state an applicant must have been a military position that requires driving a commercial vehicle in the last year and that the applicant must have operated a commercial vehicle for at least two years before leaving the military.

The American Pyrotechnics Association has submitted a petition to add four new members to its existing hours exemption during the Independence Day holiday period. A separate fireworks hauler, Extreme Logistics, has also requested an HOS exemption for its 12 drivers during the same holiday period.

Convoy adds drop-and-hook loads, trailer pool program to freight-matching platform
Freight-matching platform Convoy has expanded its freight marketplace with a pre-loaded trailer program that allows owner-operators and small carriers access to drop-and-hook freight. Convoy Go, which opened for use Thursday within Convoy’s existing system, aims to curb detention time for drivers and provide greater access to power-only loads, the company says.

Spring has not sprung, to say the least, when it comes to vans, reefers on the spot market
National average spot van and refrigerated freight rates slipped again during the week ending April 13. The number of load posts fell 4 percent while truck posts increased. The arrival of produce season in several southern markets failed to make up for the effects of more capacity and bad weather.

Waiver granted to SmartDrive allowing lower windshield mounting for driver assist camera
FMCSA says SmartDrive’s camera housing is 3.7 inches wide by 5.2 inches tall and will be mounted in the approximate center of the windshield. The agency also received a request from Navistar for its ADAS to be mounted lower on the windshield that regulations allow.
