Spot market tightens ahead of Labor Day — updates in van, flat, reefer

Market tightness slowed the recent trend of falling rates. The national average for van rates was down just 1 cent at $2.15 per mile, and on a lane-to-lane basis, the market stayed pretty well balanced, with regional demand shifts in reefers and flats.

ABF Freight driver named Highway Angel for assisting sheriff’s deputy

Danny Martin saw a sheriff’s deputy attempting to handcuff a man, but saw the suspect was becoming combative, resisting arrest and pushing the deputy. Martin got out of his truck and helped the deputy get the man on the ground and handcuffed.

Hours reforms process swirling, ATRI and Trucker Nation push sleep studies to back 14-hour flexibility

ATRI has released results of a study that ATRI says lends strong credence to allowing drivers to break up their 10-hour off-duty period (and, thus, their 14-hour on-duty period) into segments. Likewise, Trucker Nation says it leaned on sleep studies to support its proposal to allow drivers to use the same type of split-sleeper flexibility.
