Snow, snow, more snow; making the most of it

MorningrunbykanglimA Pilot Flying J stop on I-70 in Warrenton, Mo., is the subject of reporting on National Public Radio today, and I’d bet you can guess the subject matter. Hear audio of the story, which will be available at about 7 p.m. ET this evening. Suffice to say that truckstop employees Terri Brackney and Greg Stratton have quite a story to tell about what happened at their stop on the section of the interstate that was closed during the blizzard. “Truck drivers are unique in situations like this,” said Brackney, then going on to point out what most of you I imagine know all too well — in emergency situations out on the roadways, haulers step up to the challenge and are generally upbeat about it. It was evident during the last round of snow in the Southeast I posted about a couple weeks back (and yeah, I talked to driver Jeff Clark, he with the uncanny knack for hitting bad weather head-on, this morning and he was in the thick of it in Iowa).

The picture above, “Morning Run,” is from Kang Lim, Quebec-based company driver for SGT 2000, from Highway 155 Southbound in La Tuque, Quebec, and a solid runner-up in Truckers News‘ January “Trucks” photo contest, hosted via the mag’s Flickr.com group. (Stay tuned to the blog and truckersnews.com for details on the winner, which we’re still finalizing, later this week.) The storm comes at an opportune time for the group — join and post your “Winter” themed photos there, then send me ([email protected]) links to their Flickr locations and a little background on yourself and the photos in question (including your phone number and mailing address) to enter our February “Winter” photo contest. I’ll be posting contest details to the group tomorrow, fyi, but generally guidelines are the same as past contests. Stay warm, everyone.
