The Highway Hero Award winner will be named at MATS later this month. Finalists are: Darrell Atkins, who rescued an elderly couple involved in a bad crash; Don Frederick, who pulled a fellow trucker from a crash and administered live-saving aid; and Paul Mathias, who performed CPR on a child involved in a fatal crash.

Alabama-based trucker recognized for pulling motorist from burning car
He noticed someone was still inside the car, so he approached and found a driver conscious and in pain trapped by the steering wheel that was jammed between the man’s ribs and belt. He then ran back to his truck and grabbed his fire extinguisher to knock the flames back.

Remembering Eddie Karwaski of former Penn. small fleet Apple House Trucking
Karwaski passed a year ago this past Tuesday, Feb. 26, says his daughter. Apple House Trucking closed in 2007 as the recession took hold, after having grown to a height of around 50 trucks in the early 1990s. Earlier than that, its distinctive blue/gold/white paint scheme was featured twice in Overdrive.
