Equipped with a network of lidar, radar and cameras that enable SAE Level 4 autonomous driving, each truck will also have a safety engineer and driver on board to monitor vehicle performance and to ensure public safety for the duration of the five round trip, two-week pilot test that kicks off Tuesday, May 21.

FMCSA has filed a “pre-rule,” also known as an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking, with the White House’s Office of Management and Budget that will seek industry input for defining who is allowed to run under exemptions granted to truckers hauling agriculture commodities.

He noticed something out of place from a truck in front of him and realized it was a flame, and he then saw smoke coming out from under the front wheels of the truck. Peter Lester pulled around and got on the horn to try to alert the other driver.

Paccar recalls nearly 7,000 Kenworth, Peterbilt trucks over various issues
A parking brake issue has prompted Paccar to recall more than 1,800 Kenworth tractors, while an electrical system issue resulted in a recall of more than 5,000 vocational Peterbilt trucks, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents.

Dashcam catches patroller crashing into truck on I-15 before ticketing trucker
In the video here, a Utah Highway Patrol officer swerved across multiple lanes of traffic before crashing into trucker Roland Terry’s tractor. According to reports, the patroller then ticketed Terry for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Terry’s fleet plans to use the dashcam video to fight the citation.

The number of load posts on the DAT network of load boards fell 11% the week ending May 12. Truck posts, meanwhile, increased 5% in the latest down indicator for spot market demand for truckers.

This four-foot walk-in storage compartment Daniel and Phyllis Snow built into the front of their spread-axle dry-van trailer, is accessible from the tractor’s deck catwalk via a door assembly. The Snows built it on a budget — slightly more than $200, and plenty sweat equit — to house tools, parts and other supplies.

Tesla sedan’s Autopilot system was active at time of fatal crash with tractor-trailer, NTSB says
Investigators found that the Tesla was traveling at approximately 68 mph at the time of impact, and according to the report, neither preliminary data nor surveillance videos indicate the driver or the Autopilot system executed evasive maneuvers before the crash.
