Spot market update: Slight demand improvements for van, reefer

Rates slipped a cent for vans and reefers but are recovering already this week, given tighter capacity and an increase in the fuel surcharge. Atlanta-Houston roundtrip — splitting the return from Texas could be advantageous.

Texas and California are Hot States for vans this week, as demand increases all across the Southern band of states. Rates are trending up in Stockton, CA and Buffalo, NY. There are lots of loads in Atlanta, but rates are moving down. Chicago van freight has been weak this spring, and it’s not improving yet.

Spot market freight activity continues to sag

A 3 percent drop in load availability in the week drove the index’s lower reading. Load availability was down 25.3 percent from the same week last year, according to Truckstop.com’s weekly Trans4Cast report.

Two steps forward, one step back: Spot market van, reefer rates retreat in last week after gains

After volume and rate gains across van, reefer and flat segments the prior week, this past week has seen van loads flat for volume. More posted trucks resulted in something of a slight rates give-back. But we’re still up over the April average.

Reefer rates slipped 2 cents themselves after an 11-cent surge the previous week, so the national average is still 9 cents ahead compared to April. Outbound rates rose in Los Angeles and Fresno, signaling a seasonal shift for reefer carriers. There is also an increase in loads available at border crossings in McAllen, Texas, and Nogales, Ariz. The Nogales-Tucson area offered 18 loads per truck last week, and rates were up as well. Atlanta is still the top market for outbound reefer loads, and Houston is a strong number two. Expect a spike in volume and rates for reefers in the next few days, as grocery chains stock up on meat and fresh produce for the Memorial Day weekend.

Spot market rates finally respond after weeks of major-market load volume improvement

Freight and rates are picking up pretty much all over the country, but lanes favoring carriers (more than 3 loads per truck) are in the Southern “belly band,” from South Carolina/Georgia, over to California.

The Southeast region was home to four of the top five markets for outbound loads and rising rates for dry vans: Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Greenville, S.C.; and Lakeland, Fla. Houston rounded out the Top Five, and van rates are also trending up in Los Angeles and Stockton, Calif.

Reefer, van spot markets in the last week — rates steady, volumes on the rise

National average rates held steady for vans last week, as gains in the Southeast and some California markets were offset by declining rates in the Midwest and Northeast. For reefers, markets in Calif., Ga., Fla., Ark. and Texas gained a lot in load volume.

More van freight is rolling out of California, Florida and Georgia, and outbound van rates are rising in those states and others in the West and Southeast. Atlanta had the most van loads last week of any freight market, and Charlotte, N.C., and Lakeland, Fla., are also in the top five. While it doesn’t show up as a high-demand state on the map, Texas is home to the remaining two of the top five markets for van load posts: Houston and Dallas. Next week’s list is likely to include Memphis and Los Angeles, where outbound volume is trending up.

April rates report: All three segments climb for first time in a year

Miami and Atlanta are now the top two markets for reefer loads, as produce season hits its stride in the Southeast. Rates are improving out of Florida, with sharp increases on key lanes out of Miami and Lakeland into the Northeast. California is also back on the map, with positive trends in volume and rates out of Los Angeles, Ontario and Sacramento. The Hot States map shows high load-to-truck ratios in Idaho, Arizona, and Arkansas, due to steady outbound volume and a relative shortage of reefer trucks in the major markets of those states.

The flat, van, reefer markets bucking the national downward rate trend in the last week

All equipment types could be getting ready for a rebound. Why? Load availability was up in the largest van freight markets last week, accompanied by a 30 percent increase in reefer freight movements compared to the previous week. Flatbed is also gaining strength.

The market for flatbed freight has been bucking the wider downward rate trend itself this month — up 5¢ per mile for flatbeds so far in April over March. That’s thanks to big increases on the highest-volume lanes. Freight is gaining strength and rates are holding up well in the Southeast, including lanes originating in Atlanta, Roanoke, Va., and Savannah, Ga. Memphis outbound rates improved by 14 cents per mile this month to an outbound average of $2.46. The lane from Memphis to Dallas added 8 cents last week, and it’s up 22 cents for the month, to $2.29 per mile. This is a good way into Texas, where you can usually find a load out of Dallas, Fort Worth and especially Houston. One Southeast regional lane to avoid: Raleigh to Baltimore. That rate is back down to $2.31/mile after a two-week surge, and you don’t want to be stuck looking for a load out of Baltimore anyway.

Spot market slips again as loads dip; a look at top states for freight activity

Truckstop.com’s Market Demand Index decreased 3.6 percent in the week ending April 18, due to a 3.3 percent decrease in load availability. Compared to the same month last year, load availability was down 16.5 percent, and the overall MDI was down a comparable 16.6 percent.

Rates report mixed for March as flatbed, van see small gains, reefer dips

Following big drops in February, per-mile rate averages paid to carriers saw little in the way of a rebound in March, with van and flatbed posting small gains and reefer rates declining further from February’s dip.
