A 3 percent drop in load availability in the week drove the index’s lower reading. Load availability was down 25.3 percent from the same week last year, according to Truckstop.com’s weekly Trans4Cast report.

After volume and rate gains across van, reefer and flat segments the prior week, this past week has seen van loads flat for volume. More posted trucks resulted in something of a slight rates give-back. But we’re still up over the April average.

All equipment types could be getting ready for a rebound. Why? Load availability was up in the largest van freight markets last week, accompanied by a 30 percent increase in reefer freight movements compared to the previous week. Flatbed is also gaining strength.

Spot market slips again as loads dip; a look at top states for freight activity
Truckstop.com’s Market Demand Index decreased 3.6 percent in the week ending April 18, due to a 3.3 percent decrease in load availability. Compared to the same month last year, load availability was down 16.5 percent, and the overall MDI was down a comparable 16.6 percent.

Following big drops in February, per-mile rate averages paid to carriers saw little in the way of a rebound in March, with van and flatbed posting small gains and reefer rates declining further from February’s dip.
