Reefer, van ‘warming market’ maps for the week

Spring freight volumes are exactly hot in van and reefer, but warming. Usually this time of year, notes DAT’s Ken Harper, rates will follow. Some local markets where owner-operators can bring confidence to negotiations detailed here.

States where van owner-operators ought to feel confident in negotiations, showing some of the highest load-to-truck ratios in the last week, include Arkansas, Louisiana, Missisippi and Alabama. Three Southeast regional hubs, meanwhile, are in the top four cities for load posts on DAT load boards: Atlanta, Charlotte and Memphis. It’s also getting easier to find loads out of Chicago, so outbound rates could begin to rise.

Spot market swings against owner-operators as loads dip, trucks climb

The number of available loads posted on the spot market, per Truckstop.com data, fell in the week, while the number of available trucks climbed. The combination pushed the index down to a reading of 13, signaling favorability for brokers in spot market negotiations.

The national average dry van load-to-truck ratio was 1.9, meaning 1.9 available van loads for every truck posting on the DAT load board network (a ratio of 3-plus usually works in carriers’ favor). Van rates, however, even with the low ratio, are climbing in the most popular lanes, especially in the Southeast and South Central regions, both of which are where you expect produce season to take reefers out of the van market since they’re needed for temperature-controlled fruits and vegetables.

Here’s the skinny — and more detail on hot markets — on activity and rate movement within the last week in flatbed (up), reefer (up in spots) and van (fairly flat) segments.

Flatbed load volume rose 4 percent and posted truck capacity declined 5 percent last week for a 9 percent increase in the load-to-truck ratio, now at 16.1 for flatbeds — that’s well up from the 12.6 ratio in Overdrive‘s last flat update two weeks ago. While rates rose on 44 of the top 72 flatbed lanes, the national average flatbed rate fell 1 cent to $1.82 per mile. Volume is surging in areas where construction activity is picking up, though, and rates are following, including outbound from Reno (up 19 cents to $2.26 per mile), Phoenix (up 18 cents to $1.75), Harrisburg, Pa. (a 31-cent gain to $2.96), and Jacksonville, Fla. (up 18 cents to $2.45). On the downside, recent steel plant shutdowns have hurt prices on some popular lanes out of Cleveland.

The national average rate for van rates got a 2-cent bump last week to $1.56 per mile with the increased load posts and decline in trucks. The van load-to-truck ratio rose from 1.4 to 1.6. At once, there are some geographic shifts happening and rates are adjusting in both directions. Hot spots in the U.S. economy boosted small markets like Decatur, Ala.; Texarkana, Texas; and Rapid City, S.D.
