Western Star donates 5700XE tractor to OOIDA for ‘Spirit of American Trucker’ tour
Western Star presented the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) with a new Western Star 5700XE Thursday at the truck maker’s 50th anniversary event in Phoenix. The tractor, the third such truck donated by Western Star to the OOIDA, will be used with OOIDA’s “Spirit of the American Trucker” tour trailer.

Flooding in Oklahoma prompts state to waive certain regs for relief load haulers
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency in her state following severe thunderstorms. The order suspends the requirements for size and weights permits of oversized vehicles that are transporting materials and supplies used for storm relief. The waiver lasts 30 days.

Two-truck Alabama fleet shut down following fatal crash, violations
Jeffery Finklea of Beatrice, Ala., was ordered to shut down his two-truck operation on April 24. FMCSA says a truck operated by J&L crossed the center line of Alabama Highway 13 on March 28 and collided head-on with a passenger car, killing both of its occupants.

Michigan to begin increasing speed limits on 1,500 miles of highway
The Michigan DOT, along with Michigan State Police, found 900 miles of non-freeway state highways to increase the speed limit for trucks to 55 miles per hour, and 600 miles of interstate highways to 65 miles per hour for trucks.
