For these demand maps, as is usual in these reports, darker colors represent higher load-to-truck ratios and better negotiating strength for carriers on average.

Reefer rates follow van to winter lows, particularly out West

With last week’s spot market update, it looked like van rate averages on many lanes might have been near the bottom for this slow season. It’s looking that way for reefer rates now, and spot market volumes have been relatively constant in the segment.

There’s less retail freight moving right now, which has affected shipments between the two distribution hubs of Memphis and Columbus, Ohio. Unlike a lot of lane pairs, these two tend to move up and down in tandem, and last week they were down. If you’ve got the extra time and are looking to get some extra miles, split either leg into two with a load to Bloomington, Ill. The run from Memphis did better — at $2.03/mile on average, $2.40 from there to Columbus — than the high-volume run straight to Columbus. The trip adds more than 200 miles, not counting deadhead, but you can also boost your average rate for all loaded miles from $1.57 to $1.89/mile. This “trihaul” works in the other direction in a similar way, too.

DAT, TransVix partner to offer rate futures for spot market

The Trucking Futures Exchange will allow carriers, shippers and brokers to buy and sell rates futures, leveraging DAT’s data on lanes and pricing. TransVix says it wants to address volatility in spot market rates and capacity, where it says spot rates can swing by as much as 40 percent in a week on some lanes.

Van rates may have hit bottom for the season, says DAT’s Ken Harper. “There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic, however, for spot freight. “Volumes on the top 100 van lanes were up 2.5 percent over the previous week, and about the same month over month.”

That lane outbound from Chicago is still averaging $2.59/mile, a pretty good rate for this time of year. Break the Cleveland to Chicago segment into two shorter hauls and you’ll more than make up the revenue difference, based on per-mile averages. Loads from Cleveland to Fort Wayne, Ind., paid $2.43/mile on average last week. From there to Chicago: $2.45/mile. If you can make it work with your schedule, you’d only be adding 26 miles and you’d boost your roundtrip revenue by around $340.
