Fuel prices putting a damper on rates as winter freight season settles in

Rates fell for hauls originating in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia, but strong freight volume may lead to a rebound on the most popular lanes this week or next.

Spot market truck demand fell, too, taking rates with it — the national load-to-truck ratio was down from 2.7 to 1.7 loads per truck last week, though that level was a more typical result for the slow winter season, DAT says, than the prior weeks. The hot states map for last week still shows a lull on the West and East Coasts, with the greater demand balance shifting to the cold Upper Midwest. This week’s hot individual markets include Missoula, Mont.; Rapid City, S.D.; Eau Claire, Wis.; Rock Island, Ill.; Decatur, Ga.; Erie, Pa.; and Syracuse, N.Y.. Those cities offer solid load volume and high load-to-truck ratios today, but local conditions can change quickly. Be sure to check on outbound load availability before you go in.

The dry van load-to-truck ratio surged from 1.9 to 3.4 loads per truck on the spot market last week, as year-end demand and ongoing bad weather faced off against a relative shortage of trucks between two holidays. Van rates held steady at a national average of $1.71 per mile, with head-haul rate increases offset by declines in back hauls. Last week’s Hot States Map shows a quiet West Coast and truck shortages in a handful of states. This week, the Hot Markets include Minneapolis, Minn.; Green Bay, Wis.; Lubbock and Laredo, Texas; Hutchinson, Kan.; and Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Pa. Those cities offer exceptional load volume, coupled with high load-to-truck ratios.

The national average rate held steady for vans last week at $1.71 per mile, despite a cent decline in the fuel surcharge. Outbound rates increased for van loads originating in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia but declined in Los Angeles, Memphis and Buffalo. Rates were affected by weather as well as last-minute freight shipments in the days before Christmas.

Van spot market update — volume, rates relatively steady into holiday week

Van load availability slipped 5 percent last week and truck capacity edged up 1 percent, pushing the average load-to-truck ratio down from 1.7 to 1.6 loads per truck.
