Demand remained strong during the week in a handful of hot markets, including Spokane, Wash.; Medford, Ore.; Fargo and Sioux Falls in N.D. and S.D., respectively; Des Moines, Iowa; Rock Island, Ill.; Hutchinson, Kan; Tulsa, Okla.; Little Rock, Ark.; Memphis; and Decatur, Ala. A shortage of trucks yielded a high load-to-truck ratio that also turned the map red in Wyoming and Maine, though volume there was low, and a brief surge in New Mexico is not generating any more new volume this week.

That combination propelled the national load-to-truck ratio up 33 percent, to 5.7 loads per truck, well above the seasonally below-average 3.9 in Overdrive‘s last update, indicating improving demand.

The national average flatbed rate was unchanged last week at $1.92 per mile, down 5 cents from the October average, or 8 cents below the average in Overdrive‘s last, early-November update. Rates trended up in Los Angeles; Rock Island, Neb.; Cleveland; and Memphis. In other key flatbed markets, rates declined, including Houston, Atlanta, Tampa and Harrisburg.

Look for a rates rebound this coming week in major markets on the East Coast, DAT says, as despite improved demand metrics, rates fell in those areas while holding steady at $1.70 per mile last week nationally on the spot market. Memphis saw a surge in traffic going in both directions, including the lanes to and from Atlanta. You can find loads back and forth all week long, but the roundtrip average is stuck at about an average $1.72 per mile. If you’re on the West Coast, look for loads in L.A. or Stockton. Outbound rates rose in Seattle and Denver last week, too, but they weren’t high to begin with.

Rates remain strong in the Midwest, despite recent declines in Green Bay and Grand Rapids. Florida is up, the Northeast is down, and fresh turkeys are ready to roll out of Arkansas in time for Thanksgiving.

Spot market van load availability, after weeks of flat or declining numbers on DAT Load Boards, rose 8.4 percent last week, the company reports. Truck posts declined 2.2 percent, pushing the national load-to-truck ratio up from 1.3 to 1.5. For the month of October, load posts were down 11 percent compared to September, but demand remained high in the Pacific Northwest agricultural markets, as shown in this map. A relative shortage of trucks also led to higher ratios in the Dakotas and in Missoula, Mont., but demand there was more subdued.
