Van freight, rates: Where’s it hot and where it’s not

Spot market trend of the week: Van owner-operator demand, rates and volume spotlighted nationally and in some local markets. Where it hottest: Parts of California and Texas, DAT says.

This “hot states” map is based on the week of July 5-11. Los Angeles, Stockton and the Central California coast are busy, as is Houston and the Mexican border-crossing areas in Arizona and Texas. Capacity was also tight last week in Shreveport, La.; Little Rock, Ark.; and Decatur, Ala. The darker red areas indicate statewide load-to-truck ratios that are well above the week’s national average of 2.0 loads per truck, as recorded on DAT load boards.

Postscript: Analyzing base linehaul rates minus fuel

Controlling for declines in fuel prices, base line-haul rates were up in April viewed year over year, suggesting a continuing good rate negotiating environment for independents able to secure freight.

McCollister noted that dynamic sliders to refine search results “are available to users… Every time you move a slider the results are updated immediately … as fast as data travels across the Internet.” Broker reviews have likewise been brought into results. “Carriers can receive review score for a broker or shipper before picking up the phone – they can also rate their own network of their favorite brokers or shippers,” he added.

WHERE RATES ARE: According to DAT’s Trendlines report, the final Dec 28-Jan 3 holiday week saw freight availability remain more or less stable. The average line haul rate held steady for vans, but the total rate dipped 1 cent per mile likely due to the declining fuel surcharge, with per-gallon prices. Demand for truckers continued generally strong, though, as even with fuel prices on the decline, rates increased for flatbeds and reefers.
