Truckers with high BMI would be forced into apnea screening under FMCSA committee recommendations, drivers respond

The committees recommend FMCSA require certain truckers to be screened for sleep apnea based on their BMI and other risk factors. Truckers with a BMI of 33 or higher would also be subject to screening if they meet three other qualifiers, a list that includes being male and being older than 42 — a large demographic among truckers.

Two days, two near-fatalities with plenty of motorist impatience at fault caught on the dashcam of independent owner-operator Howard Salmon. In both incidents, Salmon provided a principle piece of evidence to local law enforcement in Sarasota and Palmetto, Fla.

Mere inches of a near miss: Quick evasive action saves truck from sure disaster

This dashcam vid comes from the Connecticut-based 250-truck Bozzuto’s fleet. Says Tom Halpin, transportation safety manager at Bozzuto’s: “In the words of the driver,” one of Bozzuto’s most senior, “‘I don’t know if [the motorist] fell asleep or was distracted.’ It was mere inches in a near miss.”
