They agency says it does not have a timeline for when the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners will be live again. The agency is directing drivers in need of medical certification to reach out to examiners directly “to verify that they are certified and listed.”

A bipartisan and bicameral group of U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday announced intentions to introduce a bill in Congress to require tractor-trailers to be equipped with so-called side underride guards, intended to protect car occupants in crashes in which the car slides under the trailer.

Short-term rental trucks land a short-term ELD exemption
TRALA requested in March a more permanent exemption from ELD use for short-term rental trucks. In October, FMCSA granted an ongoing exemption for rental trucks used for eight days or fewer, rather than 30 days. Rentals fewer than 30 days now get until mid-March to comply with the mandate.

Truckers rack up nearly 39,000 warnings, citations during Operation Safe Driver Week
Truckers were given 30,714 warnings and 8,164 citations during the enforcement blitz, 84.2 percent of which were for state and local moving violations. Speeding accounted for 7.4 percent of violations.

Anheuser-Busch reserves 40 Tesla Semis for beer-hauling fleet
The 40 semi-trucks, one of Tesla’s largest reported pre-orders, will be fully electric-powered and equipped with autonomous driving capabilities. Anheuser says the order is part of the company’s goals to slash its carbon output in the coming decade.

Daimler recalls more than 400,000 Freightliner, Western Star trucks for brake light issue
Affected trucks include model year 2008-2018 Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 4700, 4900, 5700 and 6900 trucks. DTNA says after hard brake applications, the brake light pressure switch may not activate the brake lights with the light application of the brake pedal.
