Cargo theft incidents increase in third quarter, values fall
During 2017’s third quarter, the cargo theft recording firm saw a total of 160 cargo thefts with an average loss value per theft of $117,137. Even though the number of thefts were up quarter-over-quarter, the value of thefts was down 17 percent.

The DOE reports fuel prices in California far exceeded the 20-cent tax hike, increasing by 35.6 cents during the week. California’s dramatic increase, tied in with sizeable increases in other regions, brought prices to $2.882 per gallon on average in the U.S.

Brake Safety Day inspection blitz resulted in nearly 1,700 trucks placed out-of-service
In total, inspectors in the U.S. and Canada inspected 7,698 commercial vehicles during the one-day event, and 22 percent were placed out-of-service for violations. Fourteen percent (or 1,064) of the 7,698 inspected vehicles had brake-related violations.

Officers can require a driver to submit to an oral fluid test with a mouth swab at roadside to detect the presence of a controlled substance. The test can determine the presence of Schedule 1-5 controlled substances, much like a breathalyzer detects alcohol.
