POLL: Ever been tested/treated for sleep apnea?
With two years gone now since drivers were required to utilize a medical examiner of the national registry for med certification, this poll looks at the extent to which apnea testing has grown more common — or not. Have you ever been tested or treated?

Sleep apnea back front and center of health/safety conversation
Following release of FMCSA apnea “pre-rule” requesting information, and release of study on apnea and crash risk, conversation among advocates heats up over study’s validity, more.
May 5, 2016
2014 results of this polling showed a majority of truckers hadn’t ever been tested for sleep apnea. That year was the first in which drivers were required to utilize a medical examiner on the National Registry of examiners, mandatory training for which (for doctors) included a variety of screening protocols for apnea, given no single regulation or guidance in place. What’s been your experience since that time? Find an updated poll below.

Don’t let the dirty dictate the digs
“We can either sit around and feed into the stereotype by allowing the unguided children to run the show, or we can train them to be truckers, and find out which ones can handle it and integrate with pride and a positive image.”

Don’t ban me, bro

Potential for fatigue detection points to intensive enforcement
Fatigue-related monitoring could be next in line. Its advance in the regulatory arena will depend on two things: the effectiveness of technology in predicting fatigue in relation to crash risk, and to what extent, if any, privacy law restricts or prevents a mandate.

Your health — ripe for biomonitoring and telematics
In the not-so-distant future, your truck and its associated systems will be able to read your vital signs and alert you and others to an impending health breakdown. This data could be synced to your truck’s communications system, which could automatically send select health data to your fleet, your insurance provider or FMCSA.

Shown here is owner-operator Jason Chamberlain's 1985 Kenworth W900B, powered by a Big Cam Cummins with a 13-speed. He owns two trailers -- a 55-ton, three-axle XL Specialized RGN and a 2017 Benson three-axle, low-pro step deck.
