Smartphone- and tablet-based electronic logging device provider Ezlogz has added Ethereum blockchain functionality to its app, the company says, which allows owner-operators to securely and transparently handle certain transactions via the app and ensures tamper-free ELD data, the company says.

Congress passes spending bill exempting livestock haulers from ELDs until October
Both chambers of Congress on Thursday passed a $1.3 trillion spending bill that allows livestock haulers to run without electronic logging devices through the end of September. The bill has now been sent to the White House for President Trumpâs signature, who has threatened to veto the bill.

As hard enforcement of ELD mandate looms, FMCSA details return-to-duty procedure
In two weeks, truckers cited for ELD non-compliance will be placed out of service for 10 hours. Hereâs FMCSAâs expected return-to-duty protocol. The agency says since December 18, only four percent of inspections have yielded an ELD infraction.

Group seeks ELD compliance waiver on short-term rental trucks through end of year
TRALA says its 90-day waiver isnât sufficient to address the ELD issues that have arisen with short-term rentals. The group says when fleets rent trucks to meet short-term demands, the ELD platform a fleet uses is often times different from the ELD platform in a rental truck.

Livestock, ag haulers now have until June to comply with ELD mandate
Truckers hauling agricultural products and livestock have received further reprieve from compliance with the U.S. DOTâs electronic logging device. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced Tuesday that such haulers will have until June 18 to adopt an ELD. They can continue to run on paper logs in the meantime.

OOIDA asks House committee to hold hearing on ELD mandate
Continuing in its so-far-unfruitful appeal to lawmakers, courts and regulators to reevaluate the federal electronic logging device mandate, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has asked the leaders of the Houseâs Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to hold a hearing on its concerns surrounding ELD implementation.

If you incurred a 395.8(a) prior to April 1 simply for not having an ELD record and you were keeping paper logs, challenge it through the FMCSA DataQs process to remove it from carrier records.

Several states consider measures to block ELD mandate enforcement
The bills mostly cite concerns of small business truckers as the reasons to repeal the mandate or suspend its enforcement, as well as the potential for the mandate to drive up prices of goods for consumers. Legislators in South Dakota, Missouri, Tennessee and Idaho have introduced resolutions taking aim at the mandate.

Fleets running PeopleNet ELDs could see brief expansion of ELD grandfather clause
The waiver request, filed by Old Dominion on behalf of all carriers running PeopleNet systems, stems from technical issues in updates to PeopleNetâs e-logging software. While PeopleNetâs hardware is compliant with the mandate, Old Dominion says PeopleNetâs December 2017 software update, intended to bring its AOBRD software up to an ELD-compliant spec, did not integrate with PeopleNetâs fleet management software.

Increasingly, mandated ELDs are highlighting inadequacies of the hours of service rule. But ârules are rules,â note watchers. Regarding the wiggle room that drivers enjoyed with paper logs, there is no quick tweaking of hours today in the cards that would restore that unofficial flexibility.
