Fatalities down, injuries way up. What gives?
FMCSA’s report says that the number of trucks involved in fatal accidents decreased 5 percent in 2014. The only problem is a conflicting statistic: Injuries in truck-involved wrecks increased by 21 percent. I asked around for explanations.

The latest on speed limiters: Senate wants DOT to act now
Proponents of a speed limiter mandate, like some trucking lobbyists and so-called safety advocacy groups, appear tired of the DOT dragging its feet in getting the proposed rule published and have asked Congress to intervene.

Off the clock: An hours of service alternative
Whatever happens for better or for worse, it’s worth noting that a system based in reality – the driver’s true fitness for duty, not some rigid, almost arbitrary system cooked up by regulators – could be a big improvement over a one-size-fits-all system that actually fits very few.

In-cab cameras, such as this Guardian system, and other emerging technologies have potential for fatigue measurement, and could eventually lead to radical hours of service changes.

Teamsters, safety groups to Congress: Don’t touch hours of service
Two key trucking items likely to see action in the appropriations process include a fix to the hours of service legislative screw-up from Congress’ 2016 DOT appropriations law and the revival of the so-called “federal authority” provisions floated in recent transportation-related bills.

Rearview: Peterbilt ads through the years
From the long needle-nose models of the ’60s to the cabovers of the ’70s and ’80s, the 20-year reign of the iconic Model 379 and today’s modern aerodynamic tractor stylings, Peterbilt tractors have graced the back cover of Overdrive for nearly 40 years. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders advocates rail system to ‘take trucks off the roads’
It’s unclear whether he meant all trucks or just some trucks, but speaking this weekend, presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders, running as a Democrat, told a crowd of supporters the U.S. could do “incredible things” like building a rail system to “take trucks off the roads” if he’s elected president.

Diesel’s roller-coaster ride: The thrill is gone, but not for all
Now that fuel surcharges are more entrenched, the plunge to below $2 a gallon after about three years in the $4 range has generated much less notice than similar price swings in prior years — though that’s not a blanket truth for everyone.
February 23, 2016
Fuel surcharges have largely gutted the downside impacts of diesel price volatility, but not for all operators.

Rearview: Different times, similar problems
Overly picky roadside inspectors, untimely but necessary equipment repairs and a highway full of unseasoned truckers may sound like 2016 owner-operator annoyances. But as evidenced by these 1970s cartoons from Overdrive, they’re problems that have persisted for nearly a half-century.

Second take: Owner-operators stand to benefit from ‘beyond compliance’ program
“If you lose, why wouldn’t you at least try to get the best deal possible? FMCSA is being asked to think outside the box. Owner-ops and small businesses should too,” says Joe Rajkovacz. “It would sure be nice to find out some ideas from truckers out there not buying into the gospel of ‘Just say no.’”
