When cellular service adds monthly fees to ELDs
Most any BYOD-type ELD with dedicated tablets will come with monthly costs for a data plan. If you’re pairing a BYOD ELD with a smartphone or tablet you already have with a service plan, such cost wouldn’t necessarily figure into your back-of-the-envelope investment calculation.

The bring-your-own device ELD is available for both Android and iOS platforms on any tablet or smartphone tethered with an OBDII device plugged into the truck’s diagnostic port. A federal court on Wednesday ruled that the Unified Carrier Registration planning board, who’s tasked with establishing annual carrier registration fee structures, violated federal open meetings laws by holding a deliberative meeting Sept. 14 without notifying the public.

Love’s opens new truck stop in Oklahoma
The new store is located off of I-44 at exit 107 and offers drivers 48 truck parking spaces, five showers, laundry facilities, a Dunkin’ Donuts and a Subway restaurant. A casino operated by the Chickasaw Nation is set to open at the travel stop later this year.

Rhode Island DOT says work will begin Friday night, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. The number of lanes on the ramp from I-195 West to I-95 South will be reduced from two lanes to one.

DOT allows another major fleet to let pre-CDL operators drive team
FMCSA says opposition stated the CLP holders who had passed the CDL skills test were too inexperienced and are safer with CDL holders in the front seat. The agency argues that had the drivers been in their home state when they passed the skills test, they would have already obtained a CDL, and could drive on their own with no one in the truck with them.

Truckers using phone-based ELDs can change duty status away from truck, FMCSA says
FMCSA will, at least for five years, allow drivers using mobile device-based ELDs (those run on a phone or tablet) to change duty status outside of and away from their vehicle. Such changes in duty status will need to be annotated, the agency says.

Higher driver pay drove carriers’ costs higher in 2016
Carrier costs on the whole climbed 1.5 cents a mile last year, according to a report from the American Transportation Research Institute, with increases in spending on driver wages and benefits outpacing savings from lower fuel expenditures.
