TxDOT moves on truck-parking survey, workshop series throughout the state
Texas Department of Transportation reps have moved on efforts to assess a way forward on potentially taking steps to improve parking infrastructure for truckers hauling to, through and from the state. TxDOT wants input now from carriers and drivers on parking issues in the state.

Texas town can now enforce truck parking bans on private property
The new ordinance in Midland gives business owners the ability to prohibit truck parking on their property with enforcement provided by the city. The ordinance allows the city to fine truckers parked in posted no parking zones on commercial property up to $500.

N.C. city bans parking trucks at drivers’ homes
Rocky Mount, N.C.’s city council adopted an ordinance that bans the parking of commercial vehicles and/or trailers longer than 25 feet or weighing more than 10,000 pounds, which includes Class 3-8 trucks, in residential areas.

Iowa DOT considering plan to close nearly one-third of rest areas
Iowa DOT’s Statewide Rest Area System draft plan would close 11 of the full-service locations and all 16 parking-only sites over a period of 5-30 years. This would eliminate approximately 279 truck parking spaces across Iowa.

Four western states seek funding for truck parking information system
The I-10 Corridor Coalition, made up of departments of transportation from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, is seeking a $13.7 million grant through the FHWA to develop a system that would inform truckers about available parking at rest areas through signs along the corridor.

Following up on a 2014 survey of truck drivers about the challenges they face in finding secure parking, the U.S. DOT’s Federal Highway Administration announced last week it plans to survey truck stop operators, state DOT officials and enforcement personnel about inadequacies in available truck parking.

Ohio looking to close I-77 rest area, seeks public comment
ODOT said in a press release there are “adequate facilities to accommodate the needs to the traveling public on the I-77 corridor,” warranting the permanent closure of the rest area in Washington County at the 3.6 milemarker. The rest area proposed to be closed offers 20 truck parking spaces.

The app will now provide location-based fuel pricing tool for truck drivers to view current retail diesel prices at thousands of truck stop locations. The app also considers routes based on truck parking capacity.

Seven Connecticut rest areas with more than 200 truck parking spots on chopping block
Connecticut DOT spokesman Kevin Nursick said his department conducted a study several years ago that revealed a truck parking deficit of 1,200 spaces each night. The seven rest areas under threat of closure offer truckers a total of 222 parking spaces that could be lost.

Pilot Flying J adds real-time parking information to app for certain locations
So far, the company has added wireless traffic sensors to 30 PFJ locations along the I-5 corridor from San Diego to Seattle, as well as one location in Knoxville, Tenn., that will feed real-time parking information to the app.
