Even with the downturn that’s affected the freight market since late 2018, owner-operators saw a marked increase in net income per mile during the second quarter of 2019. That’s according to averages from thousands of owner-operator clients tracked by ATBS, a financial services provider.

The Owlcam was designed to be a high-end camera option that, in addition to recording events like crashes, calls 911 in the event of crashes and alerts drivers to suspected vehicle break-ins. Video is available immediately to users and can be used to show crash investigators at roadside or later in other proceedings with insurers. The Owlcam includes dual HD interior and front-facing cameras.

Transflo Trailer Tracking is a newly available solar-powered device that could be useful for trailer pools, “power-only” freight, temperature-controlled fleets small and large and/or “any operation where you want to eliminate unproductive time and improve communication with drivers, customers, administrators, and maintenance personnel,” the company says.

FMCSA to charge carriers $1.25 per query in new drug and alcohol clearinghouse
Carriers, including small carriers who only employ a few drivers, will have to pay FMCSA $1.25 per query into the looming Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, which will compile records of all drivers who have failed or refused a drug or alcohol test.

Caution urged regarding deceptive factoring practices
A common tactic is to offer initial low or zero percent interest rates, but with contract language authorizing high rates later. Another is to make low rates contingent on a practice that is hard to maintain, such as submitting monthly operating statements, so that most every client will fail and trigger exorbitant fees.
