Overdrive Senior Editor Todd Dills wins three major journalism awards
Overdrive and Senior Editor Todd Dills won Best Series for CSA’s Data Trail, a continuation of the series that received business-to-business media’s highest honor, the Grand Neal, in 2014. He also won Neals for Best Data Journalist and Best Range of Work.

Roadside heat waning in Illinois
After a focus on moving violations led to a dramatic climb up Overdrive’s state inspection-intensity rankings in 2014, the Illinois State Police show signs of backing off.
November 24, 2015
Illinois’ top-10 inspection intensity ranking in 2014 was a relatively new phenomenon for the Land of Lincoln. In 2014 alone, the state climbed 15 places to No. 7. Illinois is clearly a leader in the stats for the high percentage of moving-type violations it marks on inspection reports. That emphasis coincides with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s goal in recent years to have states focus on the causes underpinning most at-fault truck accidents, as opposed to maintenance violations that show much less causation. Illinois also is not shy about giving credit where it’s due, with an above-average rate of clean inspections logged. That share has grown since 2011 by about 20 percent.

No breaks for brakes: Virginia State Police lead the nation in brake violation focus
The latest in Overdrive's CSA's Data Trail series shows a no-frills approach to inspections also puts Virginia near the top for maintenance violations overall.
October 30, 2015
State enforcement personnel rank in the top five for violations per inspection and just out of the top 10 for percentage of clean inspections. Virginia also leads all states in brake violations as a percentage of its total issued violations in 2014, a measure of the state’s focus that has seen a 22 percent rise since calendar year 2011. Close scrutiny: Pennsylvania rises up the inspection-intensity ranks
