A self-proclaimed “proud trucker’s wife” is circulating an online petition she hopes to take to Congress and the President to create a September 16 National Truck Driver Remembrance Day for the sacrifices haulers have made for the country. It would be a public holiday, says Melissa Peranteau of Sunbury, Penn., in text accompanying the petition, […]

Could EOBRs solve the detention dilemma?
EOBRs can give owner-operators a powerful tool when dealing with customers and the shipping/receiving facilities relative to detention time. Given that stopped time and location is easily retrievable with the systems, operators now have ready-made documentation to prove detention time to the shipper, beyond just drivers’ word.

Oil gamble on Wall Street? Speculation back in the headlines
President Obama is hammering on oil speculators again, while Republican opponents such as House Speaker John Boehner and presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney are calling the talk about speculation hooey, falling back on the same old “drill, baby, drill”-type rhetoric we’ve heard so much of in recent past. Problem with the latter is, well, we […]

Interviewing NFI ‘roadside midwife’ Mike Hawthorne
How many roadside midwives do you know? Such is the unlikely description that can now be appropriately applied to NFI driver Mike Hawthorne, of Somerdale, N.J. Since I wrote about him several weeks back, the driver, who delivered the third newborn baby of his hauling career in late March, has been back at work delivering […]

Humor in all places: Weigh stations, auto hauler suppliers…
That’ll be $5, driver When we quizzed operators via Overdrive‘s Facebook page about their funniest weigh-station memories, moving van hauler Robert McConnell didn’t hesitate: “Many years ago at a Colorado scale, when you used to have to go in and get your little yellow paper, a fellow mover was there and, when asked what he was […]

OOIDA on bond increase: Large brokers not the problem
I spoke to Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Executive Vice President Todd Spencer about the broker minimum bond increase issue earlier this week. The conversation followed posts to the blog looking at opposition to the measure (to raise it from $10,000 to $100,000) from small brokerages and their advocates, who have been reaching out to owner-operators […]

Speak out today in EOBR session
If you’ve not taken the opportunity to tell the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration your thoughts on just how electronic onboard recorders for hours-of-service monitoring are or will be used in the industry, today is your day. For haulers shutting down in late afternoon on the East Coast, the opportunity is particularly good. The agency’s […]

Cinderella sleeper storyI was stoked at the Southeastern Regional Truck Show in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend when, on Saturday morning, this yellow Mack pulled into the lot with none other than my childhood hometown of Rock Hill, S.C., lettered on the doors. The unit is the four-year project, completed when he put the truck in […]

When we quizzed Overdrive Facebook fans on their rigs’ nomenclature, i.e. not just the make and model but the names they used to give voice to that most personal of relationships — the on-highway operator and his or her machine — one in particular stood out for me. “I named mine ‘Jasmine,’ to honor Jazzy […]
